OELIES PUB AND GRUB

REVIEWS

INFO

Oelie's Pub and Grub is the quintessential neighbourhood pub, with the addition of a sport’s watching area, big hearty meals, and DJ’s playing dance music from 9pm, from Tuesdays to Saturdays. The atmosphere buzzes with friends meeting up, and travellers enjoying a delicious burger and a cold beer.

The pub really comes alive after the DJ takes control of the beats and gets everyone on their feet! Described as the friendliest bar in Klerksdorp, it’s the perfect place for the weary traveller looking for a place to kick back. Come hungry, because the portions are generous and usually served with chips, although lighter meals are available for those saving themselves for the dance floor.

DROSTDY VILLAGE

REVIEWS

INFO

The original buildings were built in the 1800's and were used as the Residence of the Magistrate in Wolmaransstad.

During the Anglo- Boer war the buildings were burnt down. After the war the buildings were rebuilt and used as the Drostdy until the late 1980's.

The Building was uninhabited for approximately 15 years and was left in ruins and a lurking place for loiterers.

After 15 years of negotiating, Gert and Wilna bought the premises on 1999 and started restoration immediately. In 2000 the goods sheds of the railway station and other buildings were bought from Spoornet. All the buildings were demolished and rebuilt as the Old Drostdy.

BLOEMHOF DAM

REVIEWS

INFO

The Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve, in the North West province, has the large Bloemhof Dam as its principle attraction. The extent of the dam within the reserve is around 13 000-hectares and, depending on the water levels, offers outstanding angling to complement the reserve’s bird and game viewing.

The Bloemhof Dam Nature Reserve centres on the Bloemhof Dam, one of the largest dams in South Africa. Situated on the lower region of the Vaal River, the dam not only supplies industry and agriculture, but is also an important recreational resource for the North West and Free State provinces.

Despite wildlife populations that include black and white rhinoceros, large herds of eland, oryx, springbuck, black wildebeest and small predators, angling is by far this North West nature reserve’s most popular activity, followed by bird watching.

The reserve has over 250 species of bird, and is especially good for spotting herons, storks, geese, ducks and cormorants. Seasonal migrants include flamingos, terns and teal.

THE BIG HOLE

REVIEWS

INFO

One of Kimberley’s major attractions, the Big Hole and Kimberley Mine Museum, was once a flat-topped hill and is now an awesome hole - the largest hand-dug excavation in the world - dug by picks, shovels and sheer determination, measuring 215 metres deep with a surface area of some 17 hectares and a perimeter of 1,6 km.

The Kimberley Mine site started on or about 16 July 1871 and by 14 August 1914 all mining activities ceased. By that time it had yielded 2 722 kilograms of diamonds extracted from 22,5 million tons of excavated earth. Today the Big Hole is surrounded by original old buildings from days gone by, relocated from their earlier sites to form a magnificent open air museum.

MOKALA SANParks

REVIEWS

INFO

Mokala is SANParks’ newest park. It is situated approximately 70km south-southwest of Kimberley, and west of the N12 freeway to Cape Town. Nestled in the hills, Mokala's landscape boasts a variety of koppieveld (hills) and large open plains.

The isolated dolerite hills give the place a calming feeling of seclusion. A big surprise awaits you when you pass through the hills and are confronted by the large open sandy plains towards the north and west of the Park. Drainage lines from the hills form little tributaries that run into the plains and drain into the Riet River.

BRITSTOWN MUSEUM

REVIEWS

INFO

Britstown is a small farming town situated in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The town is named after Hans Brits who settled here after he accompanied David Livingstone on a venture into the interior. Hans Brits then settled on a farm he named Gemsbokfontein, which is where Britstown now stands.

Soon after the discovery of diamonds at Hopetown and Kimberley, Brits realised that he and his neighbours could earn good money serving the growing traffic along the Diamond Way. So Brits arranged for a town to be laid out on a portion of his farm. As a tribute to him it was named Britstown.

The traveller interested in the history of the town will find the Britstown Museum at the old Holy Trinity Church in Market Street appealing.

VAAL-HARTS DAM

REVIEWS

INFO

The rather stodgy name of Vaal-Harts Storage Weir may explain why the Vaal-harts Dam is not high on the agenda for visitors.

It is true that its sole purpose is to divert water from the Vaal River, after which it is named, to the Vaal-Harts government water scheme. The water scheme, though, is rather fascinating. It is the largest irrigation scheme in the country and waters the Vaalharts Valley, an oasis on the eastern edge of the otherwise arid Northern Cape where it borders with the North West province.

The valley has been termed the Garden in the Desert by some, an apt description given the feast of olive groves, stone fruit orchards, nut and citrus trees, grapes, cotton, wheat, maize, oats and potato crops that flourish thanks to the myriad concrete canals feeding the farms that have been in the valley since the depression of the early 1930s.

BATTLE OF MAGERSFONTEIN

REVIEWS

INFO

The Battle of Magersfontein, just outside the Northern Cape town of Kimberley, took place during the second South African War on 11 December 1899. The Boers scored a decisive victory in what became known as Britain’s 'Black Week'. Visitors claim to hear a phantom Highland piper on moonlit nights.

During the second South African War, the Boers had besieged Kimberley and its 50 000 inhabitants since November 1899. Supplies were scarce in the diamond-mining town and relief was imperative.

The British public and press were demanding action. British forces advanced north along the railway line in an attempt to relieve Kimberley, but a Boer force was in their way at Magersfontein.

KAROO NATIONAL PARK

INFO

The Great Karoo is a vast and unforgiving landscape of which the Karoo National Park is but a small portion. Being the largest ecosystem in South Africa, the Karoo is home to a fascinating diversity of life, all having adapted to survive in these harsh conditions. Karoo National Park is dominated by the lofty Nuweveld Mountains and rolling plains, where many species that originally occurred here now once again occupy their former ranges.

The Karoo National Park has a wide variety of endemic wildlife. Many species have been relocated to their former ranges - such as brown hyena, lion and Cape mountain zebra. Over 20 breeding pairs of Verreaux's eagle find sanctuary within the park. There is also a wide diversity of succulent plants and small reptiles.

SASOL POTCHEFSTROOM

Sasol is an international integrated energy and chemicals company that leverages the talent and expertise of our more than 31 000 people working in 37 countries. We develop and commercialise technologies, and build and operate world-scale facilities to produce a range of high-value product streams, including liquid fuels, chemicals and low-carbon electricity.

Sasol’s new value chain-based operating model came into effect this year. Towards this end, the Sasol Group is now organised into two upstream business units, three regional operating hubs, and four customer-facing strategic business units, supported by fit-for-purpose functions as reflected in our new Sasol website.

By combining the talent of our people and our technological advantage, Sasol has been a pioneer in innovation for over six decades. As market needs and stakeholder expectations have changed, so too have our methods, facilities and products, driving progress to deliver long-term shareholder value sustainably. The growth and enhancement of our foundation businesses in Southern Africa is complemented by the significant chapter of growth, Sasol has entered in its history.

At Sasol, we recognise the growing need for countries to secure supply of energy and chemicals. For many countries, specifically those with abundant hydrocarbons, in-country conversion of these resources into liquid fuels and chemicals goes a long way to boost national economies.

Sasol’s focused and strong project pipeline means we are actively capitalising on the growth opportunities that play to our strengths in Southern Africa and North America. Our focus is creating value sustainably and we are proud to be taking this company, to new frontiers.

Sasol was established in 1950 in South Africa and we remain one of the country’s largest investors in capital projects, skills development and technological research and development. The company is listed on the JSE in South Africa and on the New York Stock Exchange in the United States.
